Snuggling in the nook of my husband’s neck.
Butter seeping into the craters of a perfectly toasted english muffin.
Thick & colorful design and fashion books stacked on a glass coffee table.
watching kids try to fill every single square of a waffle with maple syrup.
peeling the red wax off babybell cheese & molding it into shapes.
looking up & spotting a single balloon floating by in the sky.
scratch & sniff stickers & crayola scented markers.
Bocce ball on the beach.

The crimson-red colored stalks of rhubarb & swiss chard.
Black labs wearing red colors.
Watching children stand on their “very tippy” toes to reach the elevator button.
Cutting leftover breads, pitas, and tortillas into wedges, brushing them with olive oil, sprinkling them with sea salt, baking them & dipping the warm wedges into homemade hummus.
The sweet warm smell of funnel cakes and warm waffle cones.
Setting out for your first run of the season with a new pair of tennis shoes.
The smell of a #2 pencil.
White porcelain claw foot tubs and stone vessel sinks.
A charm bracelet with each charm holding a unique story.
Sitting outside on warm summer nights surrounded by coffee can lanterns and tiki torches.
The meaning of a Sailor knot bracelet.

watching the colors of the sky while sitting on a mossy rock in Acadia National Park & hoping to get a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis.
postcards and journal covers made from yellow birch
the clean smell and burn of a soy candle.
the brown sun-weathered look of old tobacco barns.
the many uses of linseed oil and duct tape (separately, of course).
colorful hammocks hanging from the worn wood posts of french polynesia bungalows.
the customized monogramming on Leontine linens.
making a strawberry and rhubarb pie when the fruit is at it’s peak…
buying fresh new books (all with blank pages) and planning out my first mark on the first page of the first book.

hurricane lamps full of sea glass showing the colors of the ocean: blues, whites, greens, browns, turqouise & that bright blue piece popping out every now & then. It’s even better if each piece was hand-picked and perfectly weathered on all sides…I just love those cloudy pieces of celedon greens and water blues.
pratesi sheets – sleep on them just once & you will agree…
walking into a hardware store to see the dark colors of wood & being blasted by a wall of paint chip samples…it seems to be the same in every hardware store.
the charming characteristics of “out’ buildings….weather it be a garden shed, cottage, cabana, or guest home…
the first bite of coconut cream pie at a roadside drive-in.
a great big bite from a summer tomato sprinkled with sea salt.
the way an elementary schools always smells the same.
a stone bridge spanned out over a moat.
stacks. stacks of everything. stacks of books on a wood floor and leaning against a wall or stacks of firewood freshly cut and piled next to a fire. stacks of cards and stacks of stacks of pancakes…

This “Sunday night inspiration list” is a list from my older sister, Lauren….the list includes her favorite things about spring. Lauren is my anchor, my listener, my conspirator, my counsellor, and my best friend. She makes me laugh like know one else can…we know each others’ hearts & our private family jokes. We share secrets, joys, sorrows & delights. There is no one is this world like my sister.

-a vase of hydrangea blossoms in my kitchen

-writing about my plans for the summer in a new moleskein book

-sleeping under clean white sheets with the windows open

-watching my dogs play in the light green grass

-spring rolls and peanut sauce (well, really, I love these anytime during the year!)

-growing lavender in pots on the back porch

-salads with fresh avocados

-taking a Friday afternoon off from work to sit on the porch with a good book and glass of wine

- cotton sundresses and sandals

-planting tomatoes and basil in the garden

-running outside after a freezing winter … I feel as if I could run forever.

-Most of all, I love the inspiring promise of an unforgettable summer that Spring brings!

Creasing the final fold on an origami crane.
Watching drops of water move on a glass window of a car when it’s raining… i love to watch each raindrop hit the glass window and quickly gather speed to run into another splatter of water on the window. The two raindrops run into each other and pick up speed until they reach the next drop on the window…I always try to follow the first drop and see how far it will travel on the window.
Old copper pots of various sizes hanging from the ceiling in a kitchen.
Bright rainbow sprinkles on a scoop of vanilla icecream nestled in a cake cone.
Always knowing i have a charm necklace around my neck to fiddle with if i get nervous.
Red & white twine wrapped around a brown kraft paper box
Impractical and quirky impulses.
The simplicity of a poached egg.

* The weight of a down comforter…there’s always a cool spot and always a warm spot.

* The square patch of sunlight on the bottom left-had corner of my bed my bulldog finds every morning…pure heaven for her.

*Dangling my feet…i love to dangle my feet off the side of a dock or a swinging wooden bench…something about swinging them back and forth without feeling the ground underneath.

*Hearing a song for the first time that moves you & keeping it on repeat for an hour…

*Peanut butter, ritz crackers and a glass of milk

* Watching kids have fun with Lucky Charms. I love the ways kids get so excited when they see the colors the milk turns as the colored sugar dissolves or how they carefully separate the marshmallow shapes and the wheat cereal and put them in two different piles.

a new year…the sunday list

* Watching little kids eat vanilla and chocolate icecream. They pile a heaping scoop of each flavor in their bowls and start to mix it up together, fascinated by the marbled swirls of brown and white colors blend together and form long ribbons of shapes. The mixing is not finished until the colors blend into a brown goop and the kids get even more excited becauase they now have ”icecream soup!”

* Although this is frustrating, I always get a little burst of energy running awkwardly through airports ( luggage flapping at my side) trying to make a connecting flight. Everyone looks at you with great understanding.

* Watching little girls line up their dolls and stuffed animals at night and hearing them say, “I love you, Teddy, I love you, kitty, I love you, Jane, I love you, Cha-Cha, I love you all & sweet dreams….” Each “I love you,” is straight from the heart and so delicate hearing it in that little girl voice.

* Finding those couple of stray french fries at the bottom of my McDonald’s bag.

* Nothing compares to the smell and crackling sounds of a real fire in the fireplace.

* Remember how fascinated I was when I learned the word, palindrome…. kayak, racecar, won ton not now, was it a rat i saw, sit on a potato pan otis. I spent the entire day finding words and phrases that were palindromes.

*Cutting a thick deli sandwich in half. I love to see the perfectly straight and even layers of turkey, ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mustard layered evenly on top of one another. The first bit looks so clean and inviting.

* How a snowy day actually can come as a relief. You know that you are comfortable and safe inside your house & you’re not missing anything outside because the world is at rest. You can nest into activities that make you feel warm (can certain activities make you feel warm….??): baking, napping, reading by the fire, organizing old photos (but spending more time looking at them and capturing the memories), writing, and chatting with an old friend.

* Geese flying in a V-formation together.

* A new year! For me that means: new possibilities, new risks, saying yes & saying no, trying harder (and, after that, trying more), being patient, embracing obstacles, forgetting about fear, reaching out, making goals, appreciating my life.
