Forgetful Gentleman

Trying to whip that husband or boyfriend of yours into shape? Desperately searching on his behalf for a New Year’s Resolution that he might actually be able to keep? I stumbled across something recently that might work wonders on the men in our lives. Allow me to explain…

In the summer of 2009, I came across two recent UVA grads selling stationery in cigar boxes at the Charlottesville City Market. Fresh off a front page article in the local newspaper, the guys at Forgetful Gentleman were starting a company to make it easier for the busy, modern man to become (as they say) “a gentleman.”

Fast forward 18 months, and boy, have they come a long way (how many of us have been mentioned in Businessweek?!). After reading up on them, I determined that being a “Gentleman” is (among a few other things) remembering to wish your mother a happy birthday, or thanking a friend for coming to your rescue, or better yet, knowing how to convey your love to that special someone. Wouldn’t we all like that :)

According to the original forgetful gentlemen, Brett and Nate, real gentlemen say, “Thank you.” and “I love you!” – and not just with an e-mail or, worse, a text message < LOL :)> but with a handwritten and personal note. For any of you that call Charlottesville home, I know that Rock Paper Scissors on the Downtown Mall carries their products, or you can just check out their website.

It’s only January 13th, but I think I know what I’ll be getting for Bryan (shhhh) for Valentine’s Day this year…

An ode to…Anna C. De Leon

Drumroll please…allow me introduce you to the creative & fabulous, Anna C. De Leon. I met Anna several months ago when I was the lucky winner of her stationery giveaway! After I received the most fabulous notecards from her (I seriously went through all 12 of them in less than 3 days,) I knew that this was one chica in Charlotte that I had to meet. For Anna, her passion and love for creativity stems from her Fashion Merchandising & Graphic Design background. Her graphic & stationery worlds collided when she was on the hunt for her own wedding invitations….nothing in the stores seemed to fit. Anna took matters into her own hands & decided to make her own. She quickly started designing other stationery & the rest, my friends, is h.i.s.t.o.r.y. Anna specializes in unique wedding invitations and personal stationery products…Check out her website here!

As I was sitting in bed this morning & flipping through the pages my Domino Design Book (which I love)…all of the sudden ….bam….that little pesky paper cut happened around page 64. Sure wish I had some of these Band-Aids designed by Cynthia Rowley to cheer me up.

We’ve all heard of Daily Candy, right? That creative lifestyle e-mail that pops up in your inbox every morning bringing you the insider’s scoop to everything ‘you.just.can’t.live.without.’ The other day, I was browsing through an article about a fabo. new textile line & I noticed the sweetest bulldog line drawing right on the front page…the simplicity & personality drew me in closer & I got to searchin’. Oh, say about and hour later, I learned about the illustrator that draws all the images on the Daily Candy website, Miss Capricho. Love her chic & colorful images.

Another yearly ritual Lauren looks forward to diving into full speed is “magazine sorting.” Lauren subscribes to dozens of magazines & throughout the year, she has little time to read them. She arrives in Aruba with approximately a small boat-load of unread magazines & each day, she tears out articles and tid-bits from each one. Afterward, she divides all the articles, recipes, work-out tips, “must have” items, and organizing tips into several different groups and transfers all this info into separate mole-skin books (this moleskin series is particularly nice.) It doesn’t stop there…she then adds the lists to a downloaded i-phone app like the moleskine i-phone app or notifyme. If this girl wasn’t an attorney in Dallas, she’d be the most fantastic personal organizer that ever stepped foot on this planet.

Dani Cards. Sweet cards. Sweet stories.

you don't feel strapped in. you feel nervous. you want to puke.
but it's also euphoric.
kind of like taking risks and falling in love and traveling to foreign lands on your own...

but it's worth it. it's so worth it.

we were biking on a deserted road passing by hundreds of thick trees on our way to easter lunch. 
dylan had bought flowers to bring for miranda. i lagged behind on my old pedal bike. 
he stretched out his arms and the whole sunday smiled.

this little plane flew quietly overhead as i sat so small in front of the indian ocean. there was no point to the day, only to scavenge for shells and write things in the sand and maybe take a nap by the dunes. 
it reminded me that flying is hard. getting your wings together and gathering up belief and choosing to aim for the heavens, it's hard. but once you're up there, the view is...ridiculous. 
congratulations should always be in order for such things.

Lists…

I’m one of them. Willy Wonka would say, ”We are the music makers, the dreamers of dreams” & i’ll add…”we are the list-makers.” I just seem to make lists all the time…lists of things I love, lists of things to get done, lists of people I need to write, & lists of random thoughts. In the evening, I’ll even make a list of everything i’ve accomplished that day just to get the pure satisfaction of crossing everything off. Something about these lists printed with white foil on 100% recycled paper caught my eye.
