Skeleton Keys

I’ve always been intrigued by the romantic idea of skeleton keys & I’m excited to start incorporating them into my long charm necklaces (they will be on the website soon).   My good friend recently gave me a brown paper bag full of skeleton keys, and I love examining each one and imagining each key opening a unique antique clock, amour, door, or treasure box.  Check out these porcelain skeleton keys here.blog_key1.gifskeleton_key2.jpg

Hable Construction

I adore my new bag by Hable Construction.  The fabrics from this company are textured, bold, sturdy, and durable….just perfect for me to lug around tons of beads and jewelry.  The textile designs are interpreted into hand-screen linen and cotton canvases.

Virginia Johnson

Scarves are an essential part of my wardrobe and I wear them throughout any season.  I love any scarf by Canadian clothing/textile designer, Virginia Johnson.  She finds inspiration from her voyages to New Zealand, Mexico, France, and India. Her scarves often include images of pebbles, camels, birds, trees, flower, water, and animals.  Please take a moment to look through her sketchbook.

Hammerpress

One of my (many) loves is letterpress.  I can rarely leave a stationery store without falling in love with a letterpress card, poster, or print.   I love the feel of the imprint on thick white paper and imagine an artist picking a specific font and hand-setting each letter onto the paper…letterpress also has a unique, vintage quality.   One of my goals this year is to learn how to make my own letterpress stationery.  One of my favorite letterpress businesses is Hammerpress.  Just look at these fabulous creations!  Hammerpress can design anything from CD packaging to a mural on a wall.

A fascination with “nooks and crannies”

I was blown away when I recently received an amazing list of inspirations from my friend, Brendan.  He enjoyed reading the list I made of semi-random inspirations on my website and shared with me a few of his…

Things like handmade paper from Amalfi, the smell of sealing wax, the chill humidity and aroma of a wine cellar, the smell of asphalt after a rainstorm, the sound of an owl at dusk, mist rising off a lake at sunrise, the smell of cracked corn and motor oil in a country garden shed, a glass of white wine backlit by candle light, lightening bugs winking in and out of existence on The Lawn as night falls, the smell of honeysuckle, primroses and field grass together on Western Albemarle road on my bike, the deep dark velvet crimson of a chocolate Cosmo (the flower, not the drink ;-), stacks and stacks of books by the bed, moss covered statuary and fountains tucked in far corners of a garden, hidden brooks, watching the sun come up from an airplane, the fog rolling across San Francisco Bay on a summer afternoon,  Fleur de Lis,  a navy blue wool cable mariner’s sweater, Bean boots,  big wood-handled well made umbrellas from London with beautiful dark iridescent fabrics, the sound of someone speaking Italian, the warm smell of pine from the tree at Christmas, feeling the weight of a dog sleeping across your lap, restaurants lit only by candles, dinners outside in the Summer in a field, under an Oak tree, bonfires, the taste of the first coffee in the middle of nowhere on a camping trip, swimming at night off of a dock under a full moon.  Et cetera, Et cetera, Et cetera . . .

thank you

I just wanted to give a special thank you to Severn Taylor who hosted a lovely home show for Erin McDermott jewelry  in New York City and another thank you to Becky Horal and Chad who had a fabulous jewelry party for me at their new home in Charlottesville!  What a blast!

a bloat of hippos…

We’ve all heard of a gaggle of geese, a pride of lions and a nest of hornets, right?   Well, have you heard of a bloat of hippos, a shoal of bass, a muster of peacocks, a parliament of owl, an unkindness of ravens, a business of ferrets, and a convocation of eagles?  I was thrilled to come across this t-shirt that lists the collective names of over 100 animals! il_fullxfull28714917.jpg http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=14616544

If you enjoy descriptive words and spacing – you’ll love this website!  I experimented with erinmcdermott.com and wordle came up with this “word cloud.”  I think that I might use the image for a business card.  What do you think?

Turquoise Toes!

I love turquoise! This summer, I have been designing with turquoise stones, drawn to turquoise shades of paint and clothing, and now I have turquoise toes.   Summer is my favorite toe season & when I have a pedicure, I love to read the names of the O.P.I. toenail polish.  Some of my favorite shades of coral include names like: Dusk over Cairo, Fiji wee jee fawn, You’re a Pisa work, Suzy sells sushi by the seashore, and not so Bora-Bora-in pink.   I must admit, everytime I look down at my feet, I get a little thrill to know that I have the color mint gelato applied to my toes.

Charlottesville City Farmers’ Market

It must be an aroma of the nutty smell of freshly brewed coffee, hot donuts, and cinnamon buns or the scent of orchids, fresh herbs, and a rainbow of produce floating through the balmy morning heat…regardless, who could resist such sweetness?  My Saturday mornings begin at 4:45 AM with a rather strong cup of coffee and an even stronger will to peel myself out of my warm covers.  I arrive at the market, set up my jewelry booth, and I am immediately satisfied by the energy and passion from the farmers, bakers, and craftspeople.  Throughout the morning, I’m greeted with sleepy, enthusiastic, and lovely customers strolling through the Charlottesville Market and enjoying their Saturday morning just as much a I am…
